Event Description:

University administrators, faculty, and staff daily face the challenges of difference: race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, and now citizenship. How do we come together to create safe spaces to discuss these challenges as opportunities for honest conversation and creative approaches to serve our university, particularly our students? This workshop is about dealing with these differences through honest conversations based on the perspectives of those who are not part of the majority. We will begin with setting the stage for conversation through a presentation that delves into the reality of those who are seen as “Other.” From the perspective that difference is neither good or bad, it just is, we will then move into solidarity groups. These groups will provide safe spaces as the participants face the challenges of difficult conversations. From there, we will start the conversation across the various groups to share insights from those who feel marginalized and not understood to creating avenues for listening and dialogue to continue the journey of becoming allies. The presentation will be given by two “Unlikely” Allies who have engaged in cross-cultural and racial discourse and are modeling ways to deal with difficult conversations and offering constructive methods for applying these in our daily lives.
